Υποκλινόμαστε!

RIP Shaheed Khaled Al-Khateb (1992 - 2017)
As an only child, Khaled was legally exempted from military service but he chose to head to the front-lines anyway, putting his skills in journalism to use working for RT Arabic, and... ultimately sacrificing himself for his homeland to document the Syrian story, dying for the truth to counter the damage done by those who make a living off lies. He was only 25 years of age, killed when his vehicle was hit by a missile fired by Daesh terrorists.
I met Khaled in Damascus two years ago, before he worked for RT Arabic, when he was part of a TV crew with Jad Georges, interviewing our delegation near the Church of St Ananias in Bab Touma. He spoke a little English so we started talking, me dropping whatever Arabic words I knew in between to make communication easier. He told me he was a Communist party member, which made it easier for the conversation to flow.
It's harder to come to terms with the death of someone you actually once met than of someone you've never met and didn't know. I heard the news at midnight and barely got any sleep because all I could think about was Khaled's last public message delivered at around the same time and place he was killed, signing off on the world with the words 'Ya Allah 3leyhoum' as if he knew his time was running out.
May time heal the pain of Khaled G. Alkhateb's family and friends.
Victory to Syria.
